Whatever made you successful in the past won’t in the future.”- Lew Platt, CEO Hewlett Packard.

This is one of my favorite life quotes, and in my opinion, I truly believe that the future belongs to “Material Science and Engineering.” The world of electronics is booming like never before. The challenge of creating devices with making them as compact and small as possible has been seen. The call of today’s technological world is only miniaturization. To make this revolution forwards, material science and engineering play a very vital role.

During my school, I was always inclined towards logical and analytical subjects like math and science. In these subjects, I developed a very significant interest and also excelled in them. In my higher secondary school, I secured the second rank with math and science as my major.

After completing my school with good grades, I also secured a place for myself to graduate from one of the most prestigious colleges in India. I got admission to the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras). It was quite obvious for me to choose a course in my under graduation. I chose the courses in which I can further pursue my dreams and considered the most exciting field for me.

Throughout my undergraduate degree, I got to learn and develop my knowledge in basic sciences and engineering. When my second year started, I started emphasizing my professional major also. I also developed a strong grip on analytical skills and got the opportunity to work on my fundamental concepts. This was all because of my course under basic science in chemistry, physics, and mathematics departments. However, on the other hand, the courses under basic engineering gave me room to develop my knowledge and experience on the practical aspect of science. I learned polarization, dielectrics, electrostatics, and more from physics, and I also learned atomic and subatomic characteristics of the material in the course of chemistry.

After gaining knowledge in these sound fundamentals, I also developed a strong and significant interest in the world of “material,” which fascinated me quite a lot. The courses were composed of conventional metal metallurgy and gave me a lot of information and insights in ceramics, mechanical and physical metallurgy, corrosion, powder metallurgy, etc.

In many areas of modern world technology, electronic materials are a dominating factor. I realized this by looking at the recent challenges and developments in the respective domain of science and technology. I have realized that there is a need to understand them in paramount for becoming a material engineer. It combines Physics, Material Science, and Electrical Engineering and has inspired me. This was the core reason behind my decision to pursue a graduate degree. Into the domain of “Material Science.” Throughout my graduate degree, my ultimate focus will be on electronics materials. My further researches and works would also be focused on the same.

I have also worked on various projects to familiarize myself with the whole process of research. One of the researches I did was during my internship. This was a summer internship at NMDC Ltd. using six-sigma tools; I had to improve the carburization of shifter sleeves. My dedicated team and I followed sponge iron.

The other two projects I did during my undergraduate degree were done in my institute itself and under my department only. One of these two projects was to study the physical property of Boronizing of Austenitic Stainless Steel, and the other was called the study and modeling of creep curves. This was also my major thesis. I got the opportunity to work in a team which eventually developed soft skills like team spirit, leadership, etc., in my personality. The overall experience was rich and wholesome, where I learned the intricacies involved in research also the various types of requirements that research has.

When I decided to pursue my graduate degree in material science, I started my research for the best university that suited my requirements. I found your prestigious university perfect for me to pursue my graduate study. The excellent research facilities and infrastructure for the domain of material science have attracted me the most. I am confident that the qualities and drive you are looking for in a candidate I have them all, from intellectual competence to requisite skills for the successful completion of your graduate program. I am looking forward to a successful association of mine with your esteemed university.
