Sample SOP for MS in Mechanical Engineering
Machines always compelled me to think how it functions and helps make human life more manageable. This was the sole reason behind my opting for mechanical engineering for my bachelor’s. Throughout my bachelor’s, I have been involved in learning every possible thing about machines. From tools to functioning and from concepts to laws has helped me increase my knowledge in mechanical engineering. However, the urge to learn more and more about machines has encouraged me to get my expertise in mechanical engineering by pursuing a master’s from your highly reputed university. Talking about my inspiration for mechanical engineering, he is my father. My father is a mechanical engineer in a government organization; he was the one who introduced me and my curious, creative mind to machines like gear cutting machines, lathe machines, hydraulics cutting machines, compressors, steam turbines, etc. Apart from this, my father also used to take me to plants like ammonia plant, generation plant and that too when my age was very impressable. These machines were so accurate and precise that they triggered my desire to know and learn about these fantastic machines more and more. I was frequent travel of the mechanical industry, all because of my father, which kept my keen interest grow exponentially in mechanical engineering. This was the reason after my school, and I chose mechanical engineering for my undergraduate.
My interests always helped me in academics. In my school years, I was a bright student. Due to my academics, I always managed to be on the toppers list of my school. In the engineering entrance exam also, I secured a decent rank which eventually helped me secure a seat in Punjab Technical University, Punjab. In my undergraduate studies, I was exposed to fascinating subjects like refrigeration and air condition, mechanics, thermodynamics, mechanical vibrations, heat and mass transfer, etc. The subjects were exciting, and activities like visiting industries to learn and gain the application and functioning of mechanics and related theories kept me involved. My interest and desire to learn more had impacted my academics in my bachelors. I scored more than 90% marks in all the courses mentioned above, along with all the practical labs. We were also taught a career-enhancing certificate like AutoCAD and pro-e, which helped me with the everyday increase in the domination of computers in every field of engineering.
I was a student who believed in the real-life implementation of whatever I had learned. Based on these learnings, I learned many concepts throughout my bachelor’s, like heat and mass transfer, refrigeration and air conditioning, thermal and fluid sciences, etc. I also submitted a project based on the Regenerative Braking System for Electric Bicycle in my final year of my bachelors. This Regenerative Braking System worked on the principle of energy. It would precisely convert the heat lost on applying brakes into something useful for the electric bicycle itself, and that was electricity. This project was got received and appreciated by various professors and H.O.D too. The core concept of this whole project was to demonstrate a regenerative braking system on an electric bicycle.
Apart from this, when the internship started, I grabbed a couple of them, which again helped me gain immense industrial exposure in the years 2011 and 2013. In this internship, I got well known to the manufacturing and maintenance department. This was all done in India’s leading fertilizer supplier National Fertilizers Limited. By the department personnel, I got appreciation on various occasions. One of those was my immense effort to increase the efficiency of the steam turbines and the boilers. I achieved this because of my mentor, who was the Chief Engineer of the department. A very ignored but significant fact which I learned in my entire internship was that Steam Turbines are the equipment that consumes the majority of energy.
Once the internships got over, I got an opportunity to join “Hotel the Royal Plaza” as an Engineer. This role was for the Maintenance and Operations Department. Here my significant responsibilities included handling chiller plants, refrigeration equipment and boilers. This was a whole new and wholesome experience for me as I got an opportunity to work with senior engineers and, alongside, implement all my learning of my bachelor’s, also got familiar with different machinery. For me, in the initial days, working together while managing a team of 25 technicians was challenging me without a doubt, but gradually, I got a flow, and things got better. I learned these soft skills of communication, leadership, etc., while managing the team. This also helped me to enhance my technical expertise in the domain.
However, at this point, I had to do something more. I got to know more about my potentials and discovered that I could contribute more to mechanical engineering. Therefore, I decided to get my expertise in mechanical engineering by pursuing masters. After browsing several universities and comparing them as per my suitability, I found your prestigious university is the perfect place and platform to achieve my goals. I am highly impressed by the faculty, infrastructure and environment of the university. The university has as many as 18 teaching labs and 25 research labs in the mechanical engineering department. The university is also ranked among 450 world universities and top in Canada. This data proves the high standards of your esteemed university. Agreeing with these facts, I believe your university will give me a perfect platform for my masters. I request you to consider my candidature for the applied program. Looking forward to a study at your university and contribute to the domain of mechanical engineering.
